New York frame of mind….

Culinary Tours

Last week my friend Linda and I spent four wonderful days in New York City celebrating her birthday with our NYC friends Louise and Gerry. Actually it was more like a food and wine fest.

When we arrived at our hotel in Manhattan, Louise met us and we had a long leisurely ‘catch up’ lunch at Genesis Bar and Restaurant located at 1708 2nd Ave. They make great angus burgers!

We just had enough time to walk back to our hotel, change clothes and head off to Vice Versa Restaurant (located at 325 W. 51st) where the three of us meet Gerry for supper before going to see the Broadway musical Hairspray.  If you liked John Travolta in the role of Edna Turnbald in Hairspray the movie, you will love George Wendt (Norm Peterson of Cheers fame) in Hairspray the musical! At the end of the show the audience was up on its feet clapping and singing along!

When we woke up the next day, New York City was covered with 20 cm (8 inches) of snow – a winter storm had brought the heaviest snowfall of the season. This snowfall delayed flights, caused traffic accidents traffic jams. Snowstorms are a way of life of us in Quebec during winter (especially this year) so we took it in stride.
Perfect day to go the the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Impressionist Art display of Renoir, Degas, Monet, Vincent Van Gogh and many others was truly spectacular. To visit all the art displays would certainly take over a week!
Since Louise is a member of the Museum we had the pleasure of having lunch in the Trustees’ Dining Room located on the 4th floor and overlooks Central Park. The food was delicious! I started off with a Truffled Polenta Soup followed by a perfect Gruyère soufflé with a salad of bitter greens and speck ham.
 After lunch we shopped at the Met Museum Store before making our way to Rustico Cooking School for a Chianti themed cooking lesson with Micol Negrin.  Our cooking experience and recipes to follow.
